While on inspections the Department used its data and labor resources to compile a list of the top 10 code violations observed in our community. These violations are important to address as they help maintain the quality of life for our residents. Below are the top 10 code violations along with descriptions and possible ways to address them:
- High weeds, grass, or vegetation: Overgrown vegetation can be an eyesore, a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and a potential health risk. To address this violation, property owners should regularly mow their lawns and trim vegetation to prevent it from encroaching on public rights of way.
- Litter: Littering is unsightly and can attract pests. Property owners should always dispose of trash properly, using designated receptacles and participating in regular trash pickup services.
- Obstructions on the alley, sidewalk, or street: Obstructions can pose safety hazards and impede pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Residents should ensure their property is free from any objects that may obstruct public access.
- Signs in the public right of way: Improperly placed signs can cause confusion or block visibility. Property owners should follow local guidelines when placing signs and obtain necessary permits.
- Bulky trash: Large trash items can attract pests and create hazards. Residents should properly dispose of bulky trash by scheduling a special pickup or taking it to designated disposal facilities.
- Substandard structures: Unsafe or unsightly structures can pose risks and violate zoning regulations. Property owners should maintain their buildings in good condition, addressing any required repairs or maintenance promptly.
- Junk motor vehicles: Abandoned or inoperable vehicles can be dangerous and unsightly. Property owners should remove junk vehicles from their property or store them out of public view.
- Illegal dumping: Improper waste disposal is illegal and harmful to the environment. Residents should dispose of their trash properly and report any instances of illegal dumping to Neighborhood Services.
- Illegal outside storage: Storing items outside inappropriately can be hazardous and violate zoning regulations. Property owners should store items in designated areas, such as garages or sheds, and keep them out of public view.
- Graffiti: Vandalism, such as graffiti, is illegal and disrespectful to others' property. Property owners should promptly remove graffiti and report instances of vandalism to the police.
