Miami Shores Village is recruiting a leader for the Police Department. The Village has a population of 10,800 and is located in Northeast Miami-Dade County with easy access to Downtown Miami, Miami Hospital District, Miami International Airport and Miami Beach. Among the Village’s landmarks are The Miami Shores Golf and Country Club, the Miami Shores Aquatic Center, Barry University, and Bayfront Park. The Village’s Police Department is a 48 member department comprised of 39 sworn and nine non-sworn personnel. It has an annual budget of $7.6M. The department is responsible for the enforcement of all local and state laws and the investigation of crimes within the Village limits.
The Chief of Police under the general direction of the Village Manager, provides innovative administrative, management and leadership direction for the police department functions, operations and personnel through supervision of subordinate staff. The Chief is responsible for preserving the peace of the Village, for commanding and directing the police force and ensuring that all the provisions of the Code of Ordinances of the Village are strictly enforced.
The ideal candidate will be a proven leader with a record of unifying a department and creating a culture that demonstrates succession, organizational culture, accountability, and neighborhood policing. Must be motivated, experienced, and an initiative-taking individual who can align the department operations with the Village’s objectives.
Must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field and advance courses in managerial and leadership training such as FBI National Academy, Northwestern Command Course, Southern Police Institute Command Course. Must be certified through the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) and have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience as Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, Major or similar rank to include three (3) years of executive management of the department’s budget and oversight of the entire process of accreditation. A comparable amount of training, education or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
